Sainted & Tainted: Neither hail nor thunder nor sideways torrents … SaintedI would like to send out a huge Sainted to Brian/Bryon. Not sure of the spelling of his name. The U.S. Postal carrier who had our walking route on 21st Avenue North between Thompson Avenue and Congress Street, South St. Paul.It was the night of the last big thunderstorm on Friday, the 11th of August. That storm had torrential rains blowing sideways, hail, lightning and thunder. I saw a guy across the street with a headlamp on and a short sleeve shirt. Ten minutes later he was at my door sopping wet. I opened the door and he said I hope you don’t mind your mail being a little damp today. He wished me a good evening and went on his way.I really appreciate all the postal carriers we have in our neighborhood but Brian/Bryon brings a whole new meaning to going above and beyond the line of duty. Thanks Brian/Bryon and all U.S. Postal workers.Dale Krech, South St. Paul SaintedI want to give my heartfelt thank you to the three Xcel Energy workers in Chisago who hustled to m...

Dynamic duo talks up San Jose with ‘Off Nite’ at Tabard Theatre In a world filled with people glued to their phones and their podcasts, you’ve got to applaud Ato Walker and Mighty Mike McGee for breathing new life into a classic format with “Off Nite,” a live variety talk show the pair hosts every Monday night at Tabard Theatre in downtown San Jose.Walker, a comedian who emcees the San Jose Improv’s open mic night, and McGee, a former Santa Clara County poet laureate, have great chemistry together and an obvious affinity for San Jose and its surrounding communities. They’re the only show that’s “regionally appreciative” of one specific area and proudly so, Walker says.“We do love the South Bay,” McGee said. “So that’s the whole purpose of Off Nite — to showcase the amazing skills, the amazing talent, the amazing community that’s fostered here throughout the South Bay Area.”Ato Walker and Mighty Mike McGee talk to comedian Sally Jackson at “Off Nite,&#...

What to watch for in 49ers-Broncos as roster continues to take shape SANTA CLARA — All we needed to know about the 49ers’ second preseason game Saturday night against the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium came when coach Kyle Shanahan referred to it as the team’s “fourth practice” of the week. Will starting quarterback Brock Purdy play along with the first-team offense? Shanahan, in a weekly appearance on the 49ers’ flagship on KNBR Thursday, was non-committal.Otherwise, it’s Sam Darnold getting the bulk of the work ahead of Trey Lance, which was the plan all along. Brandon Allen will probably mop up.Darnold is coming off a shaky practice Thursday, if you’re inclined to attach significance to those sorts of things. Lance is probably recoiling at the heightened scrutiny of his status when all he’s really trying to do is get the kind of on-field experience he’s been denied due to circumstances beyond his control.Meanwhile, Shanahan and his staff are doing their best to see that mainstays o...

Crouser cruises through shot put prelims in search of second straight world championship BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — World-record holder Ryan Crouser needed only one attempt to advance to the shot put finals at world championships, where Saturday night he was set to defend his title.Crouser’s throw of 21.48 meters (70 feet, 5 3/4 inches) in a rain-soaked ring at Hungary’s National Athletics Centre put him into the 12-man final. The American, who posted on social media this week that he was dealing with two blood clots in his lower leg, has broken the world record twice over the past 26 months. It currently stands at 23.56.A thunderstorm delayed the start of the 20-kilometer men’s race walk, the first medal event of the nine-day championships. Spain’s Álvaro Martin, who finished fourth and missed the medals stand by 18 seconds at the Tokyo Games two years ago, won the race in 1 hour, 17 minutes, 32 seconds.“In Tokyo, I felt when I was in the fourth position that I could win a medal,” he said. “Unfortunately, it did not happen and that is why th...
